Chapter Eight
My return to work was uneventful, but definitely therapeutic. I’m sure that Sheila, my administrative assistant, sensed that something was not quite right, but always the professional, she said nothing. It became common knowledge that the Judge and I had dated and our recent lack of interaction or lunches together signaled that something was amiss. Ron and I occasionally passed each other in the halls from time to time, but nothing more than a polite nod was ever exchanged. Although I missed seeing him outside of the office, this break was a welcome change. Sheila kept me busy with budget update requests and quarterly expense reports needing to be reviewed. Days passed into weeks and it was the middle of December. I knew that one day, I would need to sit down with Ron. But I wasn’t quite ready.
Thoughts of Cameron began to waft through my brain. I missed his company as well. I knew that we couldn’t leave things as they were, regardless of whether or not we would end up together. When I came home each day from work, I always looked at my answering machine, eager to see if Cameron had left me any messages. But like with Ron, no attempt was ever made to make contact.
Even sadder, my father never contacted me as to what I learned from Cameron regarding Danny and the cold medicines he was loading into his system. I suppose my father needed more time to evaluate a relationship with me.
One afternoon, while reading a court related business journal, I noticed in the want ad section that the State of California was looking for a state court administrator. The job description was practically identical to the work I was doing now, but on a much larger scale with a significantly higher salary. Maybe my time in northern Nevada had run its course, and it was time to create a new life somewhere else. I had certainly fucked up this one here.
I completed the application and added a cover letter and my updated resume. I put it all together and dropped it into the mailbox in the building. I let out a deep sigh as the envelope fell from my fingers. My destiny was out of my hands. If this came through, I reasoned, then I would say goodbye to everyone.
Coming back into my office, and taking a seat behind my desk, Sheila plopped down into a chair in my office and stared at me.
“Yes? What’s up?”
She looked at her watch, I presume for effect. A good number of weeks ago, you showed up for work looking like a jumbo jet fell on your head. I’ve been quiet, and I know you can fire me for saying this.”
“Saying what?” I cautiously asked.
“Snap out of it! Whatever the fuck is going on, Austin. You seemed to have dealt with your brother so I assume it’s not that. I’m guessing that its romantic and I know that a certain judge is no longer stopping by around here.
